Sta. Maria is located in the heart of Val Müstair. From here, the Umbrail Pass road leads to the Italian valley of Veltlin and the Stilfserjoch mountain pass (please note: the road is only open in summer). The centrally located Sta. Maria boasts a large number of hotels, eateries and shops. Next to the Pè da Munt camping grounds there is also a youth hostel. The valley hospital (Ospidal) and a pharmacy are both situated in the Sielva district. The town’s attractions include the Manufactura Tessanda hand weaving mill, the historical Muglin Mall mill, the 14/18 Museum and the ‘smallest whisky bar on Earth’, which also features a whisky museum and the HighGlen whisky distillery. In summer, Sta. Maria is the starting point for numerous mountain bike and hiking trails. In winter, the free Sportbus and the hourly PostBus comfortably and quickly transport visitors to winter sporting facilities. There are also many winter hikes, snowshoe walks and skiing routes that start directly in Sta. Maria.
